Abstract

This paper attempts to analyze the Qur’anic story of Ibrahim in the light of hermeneutical structuralism. It aims at unrevealing the meaning through its relational features of the language structure in each verse. Besides, the hermeneutical approach complements to our understanding on the text in a non-structural symbolic interpretation. By these two approaches, this paper finds a paralleled analogy between the moon, stars and sun with the statue and Namrud. The relationship between these things was evident from the point that the three were considered to be gods but no one could prove their qualities possessed by God. Another parallel was apparent from the logic of the birds, fire and goats. As Ibrahim has experienced several extraordinary events in his life, these events can be found paradigmatic relations that all of them are in the frame of sacrifice, preaching, and efforts to call people on the faith in God.

Abstract

The Al-Qur’an Tarjamah Tafsiriyah, which is initiated by Muhammad Talib as a correction to the Al-Qur’an Tarjamah Kementerian Agama which was considered as a source of radicalization, has found its paradox in the Qur’anic translation regarding the relation between Islam and state. This paper intends to answer two questions: what is the strategy of Muhammad Thalib in translating verses containing the keywords of taghut, tahkim, uli al-amr and awliya' and how relevant is the translation to the context of Indonesian Pancasila and democracy? By using socio-pragmatic theory, this paper argues that the ideology of counter-Pancasila democracy has lied in the Al-Qur’an Tarjamah Tafsiriyah. It obviously appears in the texts of translation that Thalib attempt to fight for the formalization of Sharia as a state positive law. Muhammad Thalib, for example, more often interpreted the word taghut in the Qur’an as heretical rules. These rules are contextually interpreted as thoughts, concepts, and ideologies that lead people to go astray from the way of God, including democracy, pluralism, secularism, liberalism, and Pancasila.

Abstract

Dala’il al-khayrat is a kind of fasting that has been practiced by santris, mostly, in Central and East Java. It requires the persons to fasting in range of one or three years continually. This paper departs from questions on how is this practice carried out, how does the transmission of knowledge come from and how does the foundation of the sacred text (such as hadith) lie behind the practice. By using historical method, the authors conclude that the practice of dala’il cannot be separated from the role of Shaykh Yasin who taught his students through the process of ijazah. In addition, we found that the transmission of knowledge on dala’il al-khayrat rooted from Shaykh Mahfud al-Turmusi, an Indonesian prominent scholar who taught at haramayn in the 20th Century.

Abstract

The polemic of hadith authority seems to be endlessly debated by Western and Eastern scholars, Muslims as well as non-Muslims. Aisha Y. Musa reconstructed the debate and discourse of the authority of prophetic traditions by looking at the early manuscripts of the hadith experts. Musa also presented the narratives of the opposition of hadith in the digital era. This debate shows that the authority of hadith did not always enjoy such widespread acceptance. Opposition to the hadith has emerged among Muslims from the first century and has not been limited to one era only, but until now in our contemporary digital era. The polemics are, however, not influenced by Western scholarship and orientalists. On the contrary, it is more response from Muslims to the elevation of the hadith along with the Qur’an as the duality of revelation.

Abstract

In the studies of the Qur’an, there is no central concept as that of the Qur’anic revelation itself. The revelation becomes a symbol for God’s unique communication to humans through human agency, called a prophet. Studies on the Qur’anic revelation by classical Muslim scholars have stressed much on its metaphysical aspects, while modern scholars like Toshiko Izutsu begin offering theoretical readings of the Qur’anic revelation as a linguistic concept, i.e., metaphysical communication expressed in a certain language system. By reviewing the existing studies, this article pays special attention to the sociological significance of the revelation. This study examines how revelation as an act of God arises in a setting of human history, and the extent to which it must correspond and dialogue with the values, institutions, and socio-cultural systems of its first audience. This study sees that the power of the Qur’anic revelation lies in its ability to build legitimacy and to integrate its first audience into a broader horizon that allowed them to participate in the contestation of religious discourse with older religious communities.

Abstract

This paper describes the effort of the Center for Qur’anic Studies (PSQ) Jakarta in counter-radicalism by mediating the Islamic moderation. The initiated programs of the PSQ have been managed for making an equilibrium of the radical movement in the Muslim community. The research argues that the PSQ emphasizes a soft approach to counter-radicalisation by delving into the Quranic values of moderation and tolerance. There are two primary programs of the PSQ: caderization (as a prospective mufasir) and direct preaching. The programs involve various segments of communities conforming to their educational levels or competencies in the Quranic studies. Education for Young Exegetes (Pendidikan Kader Mufasir: PKM) is an important program for master and doctoral students in writing their thesis; Post-Memorization of the Quran (Pasca-Tahfidz) is a program for those who commit to memorize the Quran; the Daurah Bidayatul Mufassir program for undergraduate students; the Training of Trainer (ToT) program for teachers of the Quran and Islamic preachers; and the Living Quran for high school students. The direct preaching program is designed to provide guidance and assistance to the community in the Friday preaching sermons, seminars, and religious teachings.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the thought of Tayyib Tizini, a Syrian nationalist philosopher, on archeology of knowledge of the plurality of the Qur’anic interpretations. Tizini is very keen to voice the plurality of Qur’anic interpretations along with the strong apparent of the coercion movement and the domination of a particular interpretation of religious texts. By using descriptive-analytic method with a philosophical-rationalistic approach, this paper concludes that the text of the Qur’an and the empirical reality of an internalized society (al-wad‘iyah al-mujtama‘ al-mushakhkhas) have an open structure that allows plurality of interpretations in accordance with the needs of humanity. Through Tizini’s archeological analysis, it is found two occurred channels in the activity of understanding the Qur’an. The first channel is limited by cognitive aspects which are also limited by the level of knowledge of the person who perceives it. The second channel presents itself in ideology which is related to material interests, political streams and ambitions, social conflicts, groups, classes, countries, nations and so on. These two channels are the two things that impose, both clandestinely and openly the process of, the emergence of a plurality of the Qur’anic interpretations.

Abstract

Deprivation of the living sphere always interconnects with the power, precisely through a scenario of territorial and capitalist interests. In practical terms, deprivation of living space has neglected social aspects, as well as confirmed the occurrence of crisis at the social-ecological level. The crisis can also be categorized as the turbulent relationship between humans and humans with nature. In the Qur’anic referentiality, deprivation of living space is a kind of denial of the mandate of God. The essence of spreading mercy to all, as like giving rights to those who reserve, not doing unjust, no activities that damage and hurt anyone, humans, animals, nature, and all creatures, has been eliminated by the dominance of the sectoral ego. As a result, a form of injustice manifests a series of violence and destruction. As an essential factor in life, it is urgent to return the living space to its position as a social function attached to the material element. In this context, the social capital framework can be a node that could bring the community back to the trusted living, that the living sphere is a common need. The social capital framework will, in turn, bring back the social aspects that are absent from the material elements.
